Medical Resources: Supplies and EquipmentBy David H. Urmann
Many medical supplies equipment like wheelchairs, hearing aids, and magnifying lenses are offered at cost. Refurbished medical supplies are available at discounted costs to help people with financial constraints.
A good majority of people with disabilities and those who suffer from chronic illnesses and pain are burdened with co-pays and out-of-pocket medical expenses. Although the health care system in many affluent countries provide free medical care for their citizens, many people in the world are left unable to afford basic health services. Some still need financial assistance despite government-run healthcare systems.
Probably the most taxing medical expenses are co-pays for medical equipment and supplies. And yet, these things are necessary for the well being of many who have physical disabilities or certain prolonged or otherwise life-changing medical conditions.
One good example is power wheelchairs that greatly enhance mobility. Although a basic, non-electric wheelchair is okay and more cost-effective, power wheelchairs have special features that enhance independence. This in itself is enough reason for people to want it. Power wheelchairs function with push buttons. In this manner, the disabled can control the chair himself. There is no need to have an assistant push the chair for him every time he needs to go somewhere.
Power wheelchairs are liberating. It gives the disabled more freedom to be in places he wants to be without hassling a nurse or a family member from pushing his chair.
Other than the liberal advantages of power wheelchairs, it also gives independence to the disabled. And alongside it is that his self-esteem increases, knowing that he can still take care of himself. He can still do the activities he wants to do.
Independence is paramount especially to people with disabilities. Mobility scooters are also another life-enhancing equipment. This is like a bicycle but with supporting wheels at the back for steady balance. This motorized equipment allows people with mobility issues to conduct themselves independently in public. A disabled person rides on it like he would a bicycle. And there are controls in the handle to set the speed, forward and backward motion of the scooter.
Scanners and magnifiers are useful and necessary equipment for people with low or otherwise impaired vision. It helps them get by with their day to day reading.
Meanwhile, the hearing aids for those with hearing problems are also life-enhancers. Incontinence kits, other assistive equipment, personal protective equipment like masks, aprons, caps, gloves and others could eat up a vast portion of the already low income of many families and individuals suffering from disabilities and chronic illnesses.
Many businesses try to lower the costs of these supplies and equipment. Many are now offering second-hand or refurbished units at reduced prices. Look for discount laboratory and medical supplies stores.
As part of their effort to make medical equipment and supplies affordable to people, many manufacturers are looking for cost-effective means to produce quality products. Now, there are actually a lot of affordable, brand new medical supplies and equipment from top quality manufacturers.
Many people have the mistaken notion that quality comes with a hefty price tag. While this may be true in some instances, this is not always the case. Quality products and services can only be useful if they are accessible and affordable to people.
